# Power profiles

Configure separate power profiles for AC power and battery use.

Monarch keeps a separate power profile for each power source. When you plug in or unplug your laptop, it automatically restores the profile saved for **AC power** or **battery power**.

{% hint style="info" %}
Until you choose your own profiles, Monarch uses these defaults:

| Power source | Default profile                                     |
| ------------ | --------------------------------------------------- |
| AC power     | `performance`, when available; otherwise `balanced` |
| Battery      | `balanced`                                          |

Not every computer exposes every profile.
{% endhint %}

## Choose profiles for AC power and battery

The easiest way is through the Monarch Menu:

1. Press **`SUPER + ALT + Space`**.
2. Open **Setup → Power Profile**.
3. Select a profile while using the power source you want to configure.

Monarch remembers the selection for the current power source and restores it whenever that source becomes active again. Repeat the process once on AC power and once on battery if you want to configure both.

You can also set either profile explicitly from a terminal:

```bash
monarch powerprofiles set ac balanced
monarch powerprofiles set battery power-saver
```

Valid profile names are `power-saver`, `balanced`, and `performance`, provided that your hardware offers them.

## Check the current profile

List the profiles available on your computer:

```bash
monarch powerprofiles list
```

Show the active profile:

```bash
powerprofilesctl get
```

## Make a temporary change

Press **`SUPER + CTRL + P`** to open Noctalia's power controls. A choice made there changes the current profile, but it does not replace Monarch's remembered per-source choice. The remembered profile is restored the next time the power source changes or the session starts.

The remembered choices are stored in:

```
~/.local/state/monarch/powerprofiles/ac
~/.local/state/monarch/powerprofiles/battery
```
